The island

El Hierro is a small island of 45 nautical miles of perimeter
There are two harbours: La Estaca on the NE coast and La Restinga on the SE coast.
The area on the SW coast from La Restinga to the lighthouse "Faro de Orchilla" is well known for it's calm seas ("Mar de Las Calmas" as this region is named) almost throughout the whole year.
Coasts:
As the youngest & smallest island of the Canaries, the coastline is an almost continuous cliff with some small beaches. There are lots of basaltic columns, sculptures, tubes, arches, caves and incredible volcanic forms around the island.
From the sea it is easy to follow how this volcanic island has giving form throughout millenniums.
Sea life:
You can meet dolphins, sea turtles, flying fish, tuna, zifios (Beaked Whales -rare species of dolphin), Whales and Sperm Whales on occasions. To complete with the whole sailing adventure, flying seagulls and pardelas (Shearwater Seabirds) on the horizon.
